Gabriela Leal (Mexico, 1981)
Gabriela González Leal, a graduate of ENPEG "La Esmeralda", was born in Mexico City, where she currently resides. Her work is featured in international projects such as "Money for Nothing" in France and Banknote Art Concept in Australia. She has served as an artistic resident in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and was nominated for the 12th "Senefelder" International Lithography Prize in Germany. Additionally, she was a finalist in the International Engraving Contest "Alfara" in Spain and received an honorable mention at the IX International Miniature MajdanArt in Serbia, as well as at the 1st Biennial of the Volcanoes in Cuernavaca Morelos, the 8th Alfredo Zalce National Biennial, and the 3rd Plastic Arts Contest "Dr. Alfonso Pérez Romo" in Aguascalientes.
Gabriela's work has been selected for prominent national biennials and competitions, and she has received scholarships from FONCA Young Creators and FOCAEM on three occasions. With 10 solo exhibitions and over 60 collective exhibitions held in Mexico, Portugal, the USA, Germany, the United Kingdom, Argentina, Serbia, Spain, Uruguay, Chile, Panama, and Cuba, her work has been widely recognized.
Her artwork is included in outstanding collections such as those of the Bank of Mexico, the Zuckerman Museum in Florida, the El Peñol Historical Museum in Colombia, and the Sonora Museum in Mexico. Gabriela utilizes various mediums and employs both contemporary and traditional techniques in her work, exploring concepts such as childhood, play, power dynamics, everyday life, and landscapes. She aims to establish connections between the past and present, prompting viewers to question their own environments. For Gabriela, the creative process serves as a meditative vehicle, inviting viewers to reflect on their own realities. She engages in investigation, documentation, experimentation, and linguistic exploration to develop her unique artistic discourse.
